What is the Healthy Living Community Event?
The Healthy Living Community Event is hosted by the Empowerment Factory, and highlights the first walking path in Pawtucket, the “Baldwin Loop”, which includes the community around the Baldwin School. Art work, healthy living panels, and more decorations can be found throughout this walking path! Participants are also encouraged to walk the Baldwin Loop, and to come back and exercise.
The family event, as a part of the Pawtucket Arts Festival, specifically highlights the importance of healthy and positive lifestyles within the community. Varied stations, arts and crafts opportunities, prizes, contests, and even more are also a part of the event! Every year more components are added to excite and build the community, while providing more resources to emphasize healthy living!
~Timeline of Events~
The tradition of the yearly Healthy Living Community Event began in 2017! The event was called the Community Hero Art Walk, as it featured numerous super hero themed stations! A superhero costume contest, decorating a super hero cape art activity, the super hero selfie booth, and a meet and greet with Batman, the Bat Mobile, Paw, and other local heroes were some of the free activities!
Another key event was the unveiling of the Healthy Living Community Art Murals! The Art Murlas were created in collaboration with the students from the Elizabeth Baldwin Elementary School and was funded through a grant received from the City of Pawtucket! The four panels were permanently displayed at Ama’s market and focus on wellness and healthy habits with positive messaging written in both English and Spanish!
Additionally, prizes were handed out throughout the event! Free goodie bags were given to the first 50 participants to complete the Baldwin Loop path! Two prize baskets valued over $100 were also presented to winners of the super hero photo contest and the raffle for signing up for The Empowerment Factory e-news!
The second Healthy Living Community Event centered around the theme of community, where the new pollinator garden at the Baldwin Elementary School was showcased! The pollinator garden was a collaboration between The City of Pawtucket, Landscape Elements, Unilock and Yardworks! The project was a focal point that enhanced the urban community with natural beauty and demonstrated the importance of interdependence and collaboration! The garden is used for environmental education, inspiring local youth and families to come together to build a better world!
Art was another important interactive aspect in this event. Activities included different crafts, weaving, face painting, coloring, and a fiber art installation! There was storytelling in the garden and a Design XRI garden lecture! Incorporating the Baldwin Loop, a scavenger walk was also hosted! To add to the list of free events, music and food were another component to the fun!
Drawings for prizes, multiple contests, and raffles were also included in the event! The first 50 people that checked in received a gift bag, participants that played games were entered to win prizes ,and there was a poster coloring contest! Two new bikes, sneakers, toys, and restaurant gift certificates were a few of the prizes!
The third annual Healthy Living Community Event began with a welcoming ceremony and was a day packed with arts and crafts, games, environmental awareness, and numerous free opportunities! Participants made jewlery, a happiness wand craft, and created bookmarks! Interactive games included the recycling game, the money game, and BOKS games on the playground! Other events such as the photo booth, music, a dance party and the bubble station provided further entertainment! In the garden, trees were planted and storytelling was also hosted. Tips on how to create a happy and healthy life were also provided! Participants were further educated on the pollinators of Rhode Island, which correlates with the community garden!
“Reading Robots” also allowed access to free books! The happy metals friends are repurposed newspaper boxes that were recycled into free book stations! They were placed around Pawtucket for people to take, read, and keep for free! The community was encouraged to check back often! Books are Wings kept them stocked and Bristol County Savings Bank funded the project!
There were many prizes, raffles, and contests too! Free ice cream was provided as well as a $1 menu for the first 200 people with tickets! Prizes included bikes, restaurant gift cards, toys, and even more!
We appreciate all who have participated in the past, our volunteers, and sponsors! We look forward to future Healthy Living Community Events and hope you will join the fun!
